The Tura bridge and the Steccaia represent the most important hydraulic work of the reclamation of the Maremma, mainly promoted during the Lorraine period and implemented by talented scientists and technicians.
Ponte Tura is the name that today is given to the building which, with this shape, was built in 1914. In its place there already existed a Ponte Tura built by Manetti around 1830.
The Tura Bridge has precisely the sense of "blocking" the entrance of the Ombrone water into the Diversivo Canal and of regulating its inflow.
The Fosso Beveraggio is the only waterway left today in Ponte Tura. Exiting to the left through the intake structure that is located before Ponte Tura, it heads towards the city and after passing the locks of a small hydroelectric plant, it is partly used for agricultural irrigation and partly buried under Via Liri, via della Pace, until you exit beyond viale Uranio and run to the side of the diversion canal.
The term steccaia was used to designate the derivations of water from the river to feed ditches and canals. The term derives from the fact that the first works of this type were built with wooden poles and cages, and it then remained in use to indicate the derivation work even when the executive method replaced the wooden parts with concrete and masonry.
For the reclamation works of the Grosseto Maremma, the Steccaia delle Bucacce is the most significant as it fed the First Diversion Canal which, with the contribution of turbid water towards the marsh, together with the other drainage works, played a decisive role in the solution of the problems of the marshy and malarial lands of the plain between Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia. Furthermore, the Steccaia still represents today the locality where this intake structure is still present.
The Steccaia allowed, through special machinery, to maneuver the complex system of locks and cataracts along the terminal stretch of the Ombrone river, thus guaranteeing, thanks to the regulation of the waters, the recovery of land to be used for agriculture.
