As early as 1754, Count van Bergh founded an iron foundry, which was taken over in Ulft in 1774 by the mayor of Diepenbrock and the pharmacist Reigers. This combination gave rise to the name DRU. Cannonballs, firebacks, windows, grates, frying pans, bathtubs and gas heaters were made. The former iron foundry is now the central meeting point for cultural and creative activities and events on the Oude IJsselstreek.
You will now find a library, a music school, a pop stage, a theater and a cinema. An artist collective is based there, but there is also a water playground and large festivals are regularly organized in the DRU Park. Even without all the events, it is a special place. The industrial buildings give the area a unique atmosphere.

The DRU in Ulft is a symbol of the iron industry in the Achterhoek, which has been causing a furore since the 18th century. For a long time, the DRU was the most important employer in the region. Industrial activity has now left. The old factory buildings have almost all been given a second life as an industrial monument.
