The port of Monopoli is one of the oldest ports on the Adriatic coast of Puglia. Its origins are pre-Roman even if it was precisely under the impulse of Rome that Monopoli, and its port, acquired strategic and commercial importance. Nonetheless, the port always remained a difficult mooring, so much so that it earned the nickname of Porto Aspro. The current appearance of the port took shape after the unification of Italy, but was concluded only after the Second World War.
