Until the seventeenth century, the IJsselmeer lay between Capelle aan den IJssel, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen, named after the river De Hollandse IJssel, which flowed in the area. In 1634 the lake was surrounded by dikes and parts were drained. This is how the Wollefoppenpolder was created.

The peat ponds that emerged later were best known for their large colonies of marsh birds, including cormorants. Cormorants used to be called plaicers. These lakes were then reclaimed to limit land loss.

At the end of the 1970s, the area changed dramatically in character again, this time due to urbanization. The Schollebos has been created along the southern edge of the area.

The Schollebos is now the green heart of Capelle aan den IJssel and, together with the 's-Gravenweg area, forms a green buffer between the Schollevaar, Middelwatering and Oostgaarde districts. The Schollebos was constructed around 1980.

If I don't feel like going somewhere by car or public transport I like to go for a walk here. If I want a longer walk I combine this nice forest with the Hitland forest.

This is a beautiful forest/park walk with great water features, beautiful vistas, nature information and especially lush greenery. The walking paths are accessible to everyone and therefore not difficult to walk. Various parking options are available. A park/forest to walk for hours. There are neat benches everywhere where you can rest and/or enjoy the view and nature.
