The Lion KnightEdit
A knight from Bleicherode, whose castle stood on a wooded hilltop, also took part in the crusade that Emperor Friedrich undertook to the Holy Land. On his return he brought with him a lion, which was so tame that he could send it down from the castle every day into the city to fetch his master's small needs in a little basket which he carried in his mouth. In memory of this, the castle Löwenburg was named.
(So the legend! In reality, a medieval castle did not stand on the Löwenburg, but it was a not insignificant prehistoric hill fort.)
The LöwenburgEdit
In the early Middle Ages, a knight lived at the Löwenburg, who was only called the Löwenritter after the lion in his coat of arms. His arrogant and proud acclaim made him unpopular with everyone. In addition, he robbed and plundered wherever there was a chance of booty. The father's arrogance also spread to his only daughter, who was distinguished by her unusual beauty. No suitor was enough for her. One was not rich enough for her, the other not handsome enough, and so it came about that she remained unmarried. Later she made up her mind to tone down her speech, but regret came too late; the suitors stayed away.
On certain days you can see the damsel in red, long flowing hair, dressed in white clothes and a bunch of keys on her side, walking around the Löwenburg and looking for a suitor. When he comes, she will take him to the underground palace and give him the treasures he has collected over the centuries. According to another legend, the key virgin is enchanted and awaits redemption. Anyone who finds the blue miracle flower, which of course only blooms every seven years on St. John's Day, can redeem it. With the fair maiden he acquires great treasures of silver and gold.
