To Bettenroder Abri I:
A rock roof spans an area of 21 square meters. After trial excavations in 1986 and 1987, a systematic area excavation was carried out down to a depth of 3 meters, including the fore area.
Attention: at the foot of the rocks in the dry area, you can see the ant lion trap funnels, the aggressive larval stage of the ant damsel.
Currently difficult to reach due to the condition of the forest.

To Bettenroder Abri IX is about 300 meters further east (Komoot has merged the two Abris):
The most extensive excavation of the Göttingen Abri Project was carried out here from 1988 to 1990. The area of the roofed room is approx. 30 square meters.
This rock is called "Wampe" by climbers. Immediately to the east is the Knubbelwand with climbing routes from IV to VIII degrees of difficulty.
Currently difficult to reach due to the condition of the forest. The best way to get there is via the path that leads up to the Knubbelwand (marked with a black X).
Attention: at the foot of the rocks in the dry area, you can see the ant lion trap funnels, the aggressive larval stage of the ant damsel.

Abri IX seems to play a prominent role in the archaeological research of the rock protection roofs in southern Lower Saxony. The excavations here were able to prove traces of use as far back as the Middle Paleolithic and traces of use in the younger Paleolithic. Also of interest is the discovery of two children's graves in 1989, in which the relatively well-preserved skeletons of a 1.5-year-old boy and a 2.5-3-year-old girl were uncovered. Investigations of samples of these skeletons from the year 2009 using the radiocarbon method, the time of death of the boy was about 460 BC. And that of the girl to approx. 800 BC. Set.
