A paradise for those seeking peace and quiet, nature lovers and mountain lake friends. The basalt lake "Ulmenstein" lies between Hofaschenbach and Mackenzell and is up to 15 meters deep. You can go around the lake on hiking trails. On the south side there is a barbecue area with seating, fireplace, barbecue hut, shelter and you have a beautiful view of the lake. A refuge for hikers and cyclists was built on the north side.

In the past few years the Mackenzell wind choir "Tonica" has given many concerts here on the Ulmenstein.

At the location of today's lake, a 70 meter high basalt dome protruded until 1908, which was gradually dismantled and transported on rails via Mackenzell to Nüst and then found its way to Holland. Up to 270 miners were employed here at that time. After the 70 meters above the ground had been removed, the miners set to work up to 30 meters below the ground to bring basalt columns to the surface.

Water broke in around 1928 and further mining was no longer possible or no longer profitable. Over the decades, the basalt lake of today developed in the depths of the quarry due to springs and fissured water.
