Quedlinburg a place with over 1000 years of history and full of stories. Somehow, the Quedlinburgers have managed to preserve their city and since it became a World Heritage Site in 1994, much has been restored. To the horror of many motorists, the narrow streets are left and it is best to walk through the city on foot.

Quedlinburg became important when it became the royal palace in the 10th century, when the Ottonian rulers celebrated Easter. It was first mentioned as a villa quae dicitur Quitilingaburg in a document of King Henry I dated April 22, 922. Later Heinrich decided the place to his burial place. After his death in 936 Memleben his body was transferred to Quedlinburg and buried in the Palatine Chapel on the Schlossberg. His widow Queen Mathilde was confirmed by Heinrichs son and successor Otto I. the foundation of a ladies' pin with the task of the theory of the dead. For thirty years she was the head of her collegiate foundation, without having become an abbess. Otto I. visited Quedlinburg at irregular intervals to celebrate Easter and to commemorate his father. In 941 he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by his younger brother Heinrich. On the Easter Hoftag 966 Otto's daughter Mathilde was entrusted as abbess with the direction of the ladies' pin. Two years later, on March 14, 968, her grandmother died and was buried at her husband's side. Her grave and her stone sarcophagus have been preserved, while Henry's tomb is empty.

The largest and most glamorous Hoftag Otto the Great took place in 973. Among the international participants were Boleslav I, Duke of Bohemia, and Mieszko I, Duke of Polans, who obeyed the emperor. Otto I died shortly thereafter. His son Otto II visited Quedlinburg only twice in his ten-year reign.

The city of Quedlinburg, located on the river Bode and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, is located in the northern Harz foreland of Saxony-Anhalt and can already look back on over 1000 years of city history. The exceptional value of Quedlinburg for the history of urban planning due to its architectural heritage, and also for German history in general, makes the city unique in many ways. And not just in the Harz Mountains. The state-approved resort is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in this low mountain range.
