It is always noticeable to visitors to Nienborg, as they have to pass through the gatehouse to get into the historic castle grounds. That is why the people of Nienborg also speak of the castle gate.
The core of the current building dates back to the 14th century. It is a roughly square, two-storey building made of rubble stone with a tent roof.
It has a flat-roofed passage with a clumsy pointed floor on the east side and a round arch on the west side. The bow is based on imposts made of slab and slant.
The seal of the Nienborg castle team shows a three-storey tower with a domed roof and battlements over a battlement wall broken through by an open double gate and two window openings. This representation probably corresponds to the former appearance of the gatehouse.
There used to be high watchtowers on both sides of the gatehouse. On the outside in front of the gate was the drawbridge over the moat.
