market fountain

Since October 2000, the brownie fountain has been bubbling on the market in its current form. It was designed by the Brehna artist Michael Weihe, who ties in with the legend of the Eilenburg elves written by the Brothers Grimm. The history of the market fountain itself goes back around 300 years. From 1712 onwards, a fountain with a figure of Neptune on the market square delighted the citizens of Eilenburg for over 140 years. In contrast, its simple successor, built in 1969, only bubbled up for a few decades. Now let the knights splash for a long time.

The fountain was designed according to a legend by the Brothers Grimm from 1816, and possibly served as a model for the Cologne Heinzelmännchens legend (1826).

At the edge of the accessible, six-meter-diameter fountain stand six knights made of Posta grey-yellow sandstone. They all have a footprint of around 40 by 40 centimeters and are between one and two and a half meters tall. Water bubbles out of them at intervals onto the previously laid small paving stones. In the middle of the knights there is also a bronze brownie about one meter high. Michael Weihe from Brehna, who also implemented his design himself, artistically implemented the legend of the Heinzelmännchen zu Eilenburg, which also found its way into the collection of the Brothers Grimm.
