The watermill was built in the 14th century and was owned by dukes, kings and nobility until it was sold to the cathedral chapter in 1477. The Clausen, Kühl and Lautrup families had been leaseholders since 1580. Customers included mill workers from the area: from Jardelund, Harrislee, Bau, Großsolt, Wanderup and Goldebek.

From 1900 to 1935 master miller Peter Thaysen was the owner. After his death sold to the Mau family. In 1961 the mill was stopped. Schafflund developed around the mill into a lively craft village. During the wars of 1628/59 the mill was twice ruined and rebuilt.

Electricity has been generated here since 1995. In the peak year of 2007, 31,600 kilowatt hours were fed into the grid.

Maintaining the mill wheel as a landmark in Schafflund requires a great deal of care and knowledge of its function. If you have any questions about the mill or are interested in getting involved, please contact the head of the water mill, Uwe Martensen.
