The Cathedral of Como (Italian: Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, also Duomo di Como) is the cathedral of the Diocese of Como. The cathedral was built as the last of the Gothic cathedrals in Lombardy. Construction began in 1396, around ten years after the foundation stone of the Milan Cathedral was laid, and lasted about three and a half centuries. During this time, numerous architectural styles were incorporated into the cathedral. The dominant architectural style has remained the original late Gothic or early Renaissance style.

The cathedral was the last of the Gothic cathedrals to be built in Lombardy. Construction began in 1396, around ten years after the foundation stone of the Milan Cathedral was laid, and lasted around three and a half centuries. During this time, numerous architectural styles were incorporated into the cathedral. The dominant architectural style remains the original style of the late Gothic or early Renaissance.[1] The cathedral houses an important painting of St. Joseph by Giambattista Pittoni.

The Church of San Giacomo is located in the center of Como, behind the Palazzo del Broletto, halfway between the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace. Its current appearance is the result of the demolition and reconstruction of a large basilica, probably built in the second half of the 11th century.

Built in the heart of the civic and political power of the city of Como, the ancient basilica was most likely the second element of a "double cathedral", a typology of ecclesiastical architecture also found in other northern Italian cities.

Numerous buildings were built near the church and the surrounding area was the scene of armed clashes between the city factions. The severe deterioration of the church and the growing importance of the nearby cathedral led to the decision in 1578 to demolish part of the building. The church was therefore halved in length and in the following decades the baroque reconstruction of what remained of the old medieval church began.

In 1798 and 1800 the French occupiers also suppressed the Congregation and all assets were confiscated and put up for sale.
In the seventies of the twentieth century the church was the subject of radical restoration interventions, during which many Romanesque elements were restored and the Baroque appearance was almost completely erased.

Very beautiful church. Impressive building that you should definitely see from the inside.
It's like being led through a one-way street. In one side, out the other. When I was there, an orchestra was playing outside, which captured the atmosphere and lightened the mood at the same time.

Como Cathedral is a very impressive building. Its architecture is known to have a German influence. This is due to the fact that northern Italy was under German influence at the time, particularly from the Rhineland.
