Here you can find everything: caponier positions, rifle positions, military bridge (to allow contingents to fight against the enemy on the other side of the water...). As is often the case on the West Wall, the positions are open and you can go inside. The fortress wall "Vestvolden" was built in the 19th century after the lost war against Prussia/Germany to protect the capital. At around 14 kilometers long, the fortress was the largest construction project in Danish history before the construction of the bridge over the Great Belt. In World War I, 50,000 soldiers served on the "West Wall". Fortunately, the kingdom was able to stay out of the war itself. Denmark's participation in the war consisted of trade with the conflicting parties, i.e. horses for the Germans and ham for the English. The development of military technology made Vestvolden pointless. The fortress wall was decommissioned in 1920, later placed under monument protection and properly pampered between 2006 and 2014 through a Relandia project. Today there is a 14-kilometer-long and 100-meter-wide recreational area that stretches through the capital region and has many corners that are worth a visit.
