The concrete remains on the edge of the Zornheimer mountain remind of a gloomy past. Before the First World War Mainz was expanded according to plans of the Supreme Army Command of the German Empire fortress. In contrast to earlier fortifications, not just a rampart was drawn around the city, but many positions were set up at strategic points in the direction of the French border. Altogether 89 fortresses formed the foremost front of the Mainz bastion and here you can examine the remains of one of these works.

Before the First World War until 1916, the Selzstellung was expanded around the fortress city of Mainz. The plan: to hold the French army here in a position war. It happened differently, it happened to the French at Verdun. After the Versailles Treaty, the fortress ring was ground. A board informs about the huge fortress buildings. Great view of Selztal, vineyards and up to Donnersberg in the Palatinate.
