    Known as the Castleman's Corkscrew, this former Southampton to Dorchester railway line is an excellent flat gravel track. It forms a section of National Cycle Network 2 that connects Brockenhurst with Burley. It was named after its founder Charles Castleman, and the meandering route it took.

      Castleman’s Corkscrew Trailway is a walking, cycling and horse riding route that follows much of the old Southampton to Dorchester railway line. It is named after Charles Castleman, a Wimborne solicitor, who was responsible for building the original railway line and the first to connect Dorset to the wider rail network. The trailway is 16.5 miles (26.5 kilometres) long and passes through some of East Dorset’s stunning landscape, including heathland, rivers and forests. It also links with Avon Heath Country Park, Moors Valley Country Park and Upton Country Park.

          Perfect gravel trail to avoid the main roads - Brockenhurst one end and Wootton Bidge the other. Use the main road towards Burley to get to another railway section or head to Wilverley for a sweet single track.

              Can get very wet and muddy in the winter, but great in the summer

                Rode this yesterday. Excellent gravel track with only minimal surface water and mud at the eastern (Brock) end. Minor diversions currently in place whilst planning permission is sought for two replacement bridges. Nothing drastic; you just drop down off the railway embankment and back up the other side (route is drawn on the map).

                  Suitable on any bike. Smooth flat and fast, good conditions all year round!

                    Just to note that this small section of trailway has some looser stones which will be unsuitable for slimmer (road bike) tyres but the further you travel West towards Ringwood, the surface becomes more forest like and therefore more pleasant to ride on.
