The Nenndorfer sulfur spring is one of the strongest in Europe. The sulfur gas emerges from the depths of the earth. Nenndorf is at least four and not more than ten milligrams per liter of dissolved sulfur.
The fountain temple was once built over the first sulfur spring in the park.
In the meantime it has been extensively restored. About Nenndorfer sulfur springs was first reported in 1546. Since 1787, when the first bath house was built, it is used to cure various ailments.

The area where the sulfur springs of Bad Nenndorf come to light was called "Auf dem Teuffelsdreck" in earlier times because of the bad smell. The sulphurous water has always been used by those seeking healing. In 1777, Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel had the sources recorded for the first time. Ten years later, in 1787, his son Wilhelm IX, Elector Wilhelm I since 1803, had the first bathing shed built and thus founded the "Schwefelbrunnen Nendorf".

The drinking spring was first built with a temple in 1790, "a neat octagonal domed temple in true Roman architectural taste". In 1842/43 a new sandstone fountain temple was built in the antique style. Women in Nenndorf costumes served the drinking cures here.
