The church was probably built in the 7th century as the Frankish Count Ebroin's own church. The original building was demolished in 1870 and rebuilt in 1871 as a three-aisled brick building by the church builder Franz Pelzer. In 1888 the west tower was added according to plans by the architect Vincenz Statz.

During the demolition work of 1880/1881, the workers on the north side of the church came across the foundations of a Roman thermal bath from the 2nd / 3rd centuries. Century, which probably belonged to the auxiliary fort Harenatium (Fort Kleve-Cattle). During excavations in 1980, further hypocausted building remains were found, which are probably also attributable to the thermal baths.
