Several public and private buildings overlook piazza del Popolo, including the town hall and the main town church, the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista. This area is the heart of the so-called "Borgo round", the medieval historic center of San Giovanni, characterized by the particular concentric layout dating back to the Lombard period. San Giovanni is in fact one of the few cities in the Po valley to have fully preserved the round shape of the nucleus.
