This pit was built as early as 1839. There is a circular path around Stockheim and Neubau on which you can follow the traces of mining.

The Sophie group was founded in 1839 by Christian von Weiß.
He gave her his wife's name.
As early as 1846, the Sophie mine was sunk to 66 depths, around 132 meters.
This was the first time that coal was mined in civil engineering in this area.
In the same year, through inheritance settlement, Richard Freiherr von Swaine became the owner of the Sophie mine.
The workforce in 1850 was around 70 miners. In 1854 there were 383 men working in the book. Despite numerous mine fires and a lot of water leaks, mining was carried out quickly and without consideration for occupational safety, so that accidents repeatedly cost miners their lives.
On January 30, 1872, Sophienschacht tore his rope.
A mining cage carrying five miners fell into the depths and five miners were killed.
With the construction of an approximately 2.8 km long cable car from the “Ernestinenhütte” rolling mill in Neuhaus to the Stockheim train station between 1880 and 1882, the Sophie mine was connected to the railway.
