In 1953 the last residents had to leave the Great Blasket - the Irish government could not guarantee their safety and care in the event of illness.
It is remarkable how many of the few islanders have written about their lives. In German the books (e.g. by Thomas O'Crohan "the boats don't sail anymore", translated by Heinrich Böll!) or the autobiography by Peig Sayers are difficult to get even from antiquarian sources, but in English try it in the Blasket Exhibition Center. After reading, your view of the islands will be completely different! Especially since there are still ruins. There are also very good videos on YouTube about the last children on the island, who came back as old people to say goodbye to the place of their childhood. Also very interesting.
