These ruins are not those of a fortress or an abbey, but of a lime kiln built near a quarry at a time, in the 19th century, when Montjean s/Loire lived from an important industrial activity. and port and was even the second busiest port on the Loire in tonnage of goods transported, after Nantes.
You will be able to see many lime kilns of this type in the surroundings, some of which date back to the 18th century. There are 23 in total, the two most imposing being this one and the one located on the banks of the Loire at the edge of the town. Every year, the lime kiln trail runs through all the existing sites.
Lime was obtained by burning limestone with coal. It was mainly used as fertilizer. The coal came from the surroundings and in particular from the mine of the trench located a few kilometers away or arrived by boat from Fresne s/Loire to a few places from here from a mine which was located on the other side of the Loire. The activity died out definitively after the 2nd World War with the arrival of synthetic fertilizers from petrochemicals.
