Bergenhusen was first mentioned in 1304 as Beveringhusen (Biberhausen). Today there are no beavers here, but one of the largest colonies of storks in Europe. Up to 22 pairs breed in the "Village of Storks".

Just rest on one of the many benches and watch the hustle and bustle of the stork parents! I come from a stork area, but the impressions from Bergenhusen topped everything I had ever known before! A trip here is definitely worth it!

Bergenhusen (Danish Berringhuse) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. The community is known nationwide as a stork village, as one of the largest white stork colonies in Europe is located here. Bergenhusen lies on the Geestrücken Stapelholm in the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands. Blumental, Brunsholm, Lüttensee and Osterfeld are in the municipal area. The eastern border of the municipal area forms the Alte Sorge, in the west the Treene flows and forms the transition to the district of North Friesland. Bergenhusen was first mentioned in 1304 as Beveringhusen (from Bewer, i.e. beaver), but archaeological finds show that Bergenhusen was also inhabited 6000 years ago, at least since the Neolithic period. This is evidenced by burial mounds and prehistoric fields.
From December 1, 1905 to 1943, Bergenhusen had a railway connection through the Schleswig State Railway Station – Friedrichstadt District Railway Station of the Schleswig District Railway. Passenger traffic was discontinued on February 1, 1934, and freight traffic ended in July 1943 at the latest, as the track was dismantled on August 2, 1943.
