In 1588, the city of Ferrol (A Coruña province) was the station of the Spanish Armada on their way to England. As a result, A Coruña was attacked in 1589 by an English naval formation under the leadership of Sir Francis Drake, but not taken. According to tradition, the successful defense of the city is associated with the citizen María Pita, after whom the city's main square is still named today. María Pita, a butcher's wife, stood out for her tenacity in the fight against the English privateers around the pirate Sir Francis Drake in 1589. She is still seen today as a heroine and a symbol of freedom.

The Praza de María Pita is a tribute to one of the most famous historical figures of La Coruña - Maria Mayor Fernández de Cámara y Pita, popularly known as María Pita. She was a heroine who played a central role during the English invasion led by Sir Francis Drake in 1589. When her husband was killed in that battle, she took up his spear and united the inhabitants of the city against the invaders, leading them to victory.
