Schülp was an Eider crossing on the Heerweg or Ochsenweg and was considered a border town between Schleswig and Holstein.

With the construction of the Eider Canal, the Eider was straightened near Schülp and with the construction of the Kiel Canal, the border town on the Eider lost its importance. The canal became a workplace for many students and gained in importance.
