The industrialist Herman Wupperman was one of the people who had a particularly strong impact on the town of Pinneberg towards the end of the 19th century. From 1856 to the 1960s, Union-Eisenwerke was one of the most important industrial companies in Pinneberg, which at times employed over 700 people. In 1878 Herman Wupperman bought the factory. The entrepreneur, born in Texas in 1852, comes from the German Wuppermann family from Barmen.
The initiative to create a memorial in honor of the deceased entrepreneur came from the workers. The design comes from Clemens Buscher, the Düsseldorf foundry Förster und Kracht was entrusted with the execution. The Hermanstrasse / Ottostrasse roundabout was chosen as the location. It was unveiled on August 2, 1902, four years after the death of Herman Wupperman.

In the past, Wuppermann not only had enamel bowls (Puttschöddel) made in Pinneberg, but was also socially involved, e.g. by building housing for his workers.

On Hermanstraße in Pinneberg stands the monumental memorial honoring the entrepreneur Herman Wupperman (1852–1898). The Texas-born entrepreneur took over the Pinneberg Union Ironworks in 1878 and expanded the factory into one of the largest enamel factories in Europe. The wealthy businessman was also heavily involved in social projects. He paid above-average wages and established numerous welfare institutions. He also commissioned the construction of a housing project with 120 affordable apartments. An accident ended his life in 1898 at the age of just 45. Four years later, the memorial, designed by the Düsseldorf artist Clemens Buscher, was unveiled. On the sides of the tall pedestal are two symbolic figures: Mercury, symbolizing successful trade, and a worker with a hammer and cogwheel.
