The originally old German word "Gaden" means something like "small, single-room house (hut)", "chamber", "chamber (especially for economic purposes)", "shop" or "floor". This would roughly define the original purpose and the appearance of the Kirchgaden.

Initially, these were only intended as residential and supply facilities in the fortified churches for emergencies, in the event of an attack or siege. In the course of time they have been established as a permanent establishment e.g. B. for the storage of harvest yields, as a storage house, as a wine store or for the safe storage of the most valuable property of the local residents "misused".

No written sources have been preserved about the use of the Thüngersheimer Gaden. The individual Gaden were owned by different families or the community. Most of the time, ownership was tied to a court. They could be sold, exchanged and inherited. Even individual parts, e.g. B. "1/3 cellar * 'or" that half gaaten "were leased to different parties.

As early as 1443, Michael Ortlieb and Fritz Leichtermut assured the Imperial District Court of Würzburg that they 'inherited the delimited gaden in the churchyard in Tungersheini from their late father Cuntz Leichtermut, who had bought it from the late Hans Bayer from Thüngersheim during his lifetime'.

The oldest building should have been built before 1500 due to its threshold-free ground floor and the continuous struts on both floors. They are, next to the wall behind the church choir, the last evidence of the former churchyard fortifications.
