In 1838 the chief miner Freiherr von Herder published his project "Tiefer Meißner Erbstolln" together with two reports from Goethe and Alexander von Humboldt, who supported the project. In this project, various proposals for the construction of a deep tunnel as far as the Muldental near Gersdorf (east of Roßwein), the Elbe Valley near Meissen and the Triebischtal near Rothschönberg were presented. Karl Gustav Adalbert von Weissenbach (1797-1848) specified the project for the construction of the Rothschönberger Stolln. In 1844 the construction of the Rothschönberger adit started by a resolution of the state parliament. For financial reasons, it was not built as deep and long as Freiherr von Herder had planned. The fiscal part (paid from state funds) was 13.9 km. The pits themselves had to bear the costs for the tunnels through the mine fields within the district. On March 21, 1877, the breakthrough between the two parts of the Rothschönberger adit took place. With this, after 33 years of construction, most Freiberg mines could be connected to the Rothschönberger Stolln and drain their pit water.
