In 1358, knight Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built in the traditional Dutch river landscape, where Maas and Waal meet. At the time ideal for collecting tolls, nowadays ideal for a day out with family or colleagues. You can also use our castle as a party location, conference location or for an overnight stay. On 26 July 2021, Loevestein was placed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO as part of the Dutch Waterline.

And in the middle of this nature reserve is Loevestein Castle. A true castle in the middle of nature with the Maas and the Waal 'on the doorstep'. The castle has been around for about 650 years. In 1361, knight Dirc Loef van Horne started building the castle. In the years to come, the castle has had many destinations. For example, it was once the place where knights lived, it was a defensive place to protect the Dutch, but it has also been used as a state prison for Hugo de Groot, among others. The castle can currently be visited as a museum.
