The Legend of the Illmensee Bell

Before the Thirty Years' War, Illmensee had a large bell with a magnificent tone. When the Swedes arrived, the townspeople sank their bell in the lake.

After the war, the community was completely impoverished. They had other worries, and the spot where the bell had sunk into the depths was forgotten. When, in better times, the townspeople remembered their bell again, they could no longer find it.

One day, a traveling scholar came to the village and offered to retrieve the bell from the lake with the help of 30 men, whom he ordered to observe absolute silence. The bell was indeed found. It was already half raised from the water when the clock struck 12 o'clock.

One of the men said a prayer of thanks, others joined in, and the bell sank back to the bottom. Since then, all searches have been in vain. Only on full moon nights can one hear dark tones rising from the lake.
