Until the 1960s, the so-called "Black Chalk of Vehrte" was mined in the black chalk pit and used primarily for paint production. Dried and ground into powder, it was exported to destinations as far afield as the USA.

The pit was once used to mine what was known as "black chalk." You can still learn about its history there today, as the black rock isn't actually chalk at all, but oil shale that formed over millions of years.

The black chalk pit in Vehrunge is now a natural monument on the northeastern edge of the Belm district of Vehrunge. It has an approx. 15 m large outcrop to the east. A rock called black chalk was mined in the black chalk pit until 1967, which was mainly used for the production of colorants and was even exported after processing[1]. However, this is not chalk, but rather carbonized oil shale. The anoxic environment at the bottom of a Jurassic shallow sea led to the accumulation of organic matter in the clayey-silty sediment of the seabed[2]. From this, oil shale was formed through diagenetic solidification, and through carbonization of this oil shale due to the heat of the Bramsch pluton during the Cretaceous period, the so-called “black chalk”[4] was created, which is unique in this form worldwide[3].
