The lynx stone is hidden in the furthest part of Saxon Switzerland on the German-Czech border. It commemorates the killing of the last wild lynx in the sandstone. Today, you no longer get a monument for this, but a hefty fine. The lynx is depicted life-size on the stone.

"Hidden" really fits the bill... The thing is really far out there, the path isn't particularly "wayy" as is typical for Zschand and it's long. The average tourist doesn't come by there by chance. ...you really have to want it.

October 2024: The descent is quite difficult due to the tall grass and the wet ground. In the Grosser Ziegengrund there are also a few trees lying across the path that are still waiting to be cut down.

    자주 묻는 질문

What is the typical difficulty of trails leading to the Luchsstein?

The trails to the Luchsstein are generally considered challenging, especially due to its remote location deep within Saxon Switzerland. Hikers often describe the journey as a rewarding challenge, requiring a good level of fitness. The descent into the Großer Ziegengrund, in particular, can be quite difficult with tall grass and wet ground, and fallen trees may obstruct paths.

What is the typical length and elevation gain for a hike to the Luchsstein?

The Luchsstein is situated at an elevation of approximately 292 meters. As it's located in the furthest part of Saxon Switzerland, reaching it typically involves longer hikes. The exact length and elevation gain depend heavily on your starting point, but be prepared for a significant trek through varied terrain. It's not a short, easy walk.

Are there family-friendly or easier routes to the Luchsstein?

Due to its remote and challenging nature, the Luchsstein is generally not recommended for very young children or those seeking an easy stroll. The paths can be rugged, wet, and steep in places. While dedicated families with hiking experience might manage, it's not typically considered a 'family-friendly' easy walk. There are no specifically designated 'easy' routes to the monument itself.

Where can I park when visiting the Luchsstein, and are there designated trailheads?

Given the Luchsstein's remote location within the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz, there isn't direct parking right at the monument. Hikers typically park in nearby villages or designated parking areas further out, such as those serving the wider Saxon Switzerland National Park, and then embark on a longer hike. Trailheads will vary depending on your chosen starting point for the extended trek.

Is the Luchsstein accessible by public transport?

Direct public transport to the Luchsstein is not available due to its secluded location. You would need to use public transport to reach a nearby town or village within Saxon Switzerland, such as Hinterhermsdorf, and then undertake a significant hike to reach the monument. Planning your route in advance, including the final hiking leg, is essential.

Are dogs allowed on the trails leading to the Luchsstein?

Generally, dogs are permitted on hiking trails in the Saxon Switzerland National Park, provided they are kept on a leash. However, given the challenging terrain, potential obstacles like fallen trees, and the remote nature of the Luchsstein, ensure your dog is fit for a long and strenuous hike. Always follow local regulations regarding pets in national parks.

What kind of gear and clothing should I wear for a hike to the Luchsstein?

For a hike to the Luchsstein, sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are highly recommended due to potentially wet and uneven terrain. Layered clothing suitable for varying weather conditions, rain gear, sufficient water, snacks, and a map or GPS device are essential. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for stability on descents and ascents.

Are there any refreshment options or cafes near the Luchsstein?

No, there are no refreshment options, cafes, or facilities directly near the Luchsstein. It is located in a very remote and wild part of the national park. Hikers should carry all necessary food and water for their entire trip. The nearest amenities would be in the villages surrounding the national park, which are a significant distance away.

Are there any scenic viewpoints close to the Luchsstein?

While the Luchsstein itself is a historical monument nestled in a valley, the journey through the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz offers numerous scenic opportunities. The surrounding national park is renowned for its unique sandstone formations, deep gorges, and forests, providing many natural viewpoints along the longer hiking routes that lead to the Luchsstein.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter around the Luchsstein?

The Luchsstein is located within the Saxon Switzerland National Park, a protected area rich in biodiversity. While spotting a wild lynx is extremely rare (the monument commemorates the last one shot in 1743), you might encounter various forest animals such as deer, wild boar, foxes, and a wide array of bird species. The area is also home to unique flora adapted to the sandstone landscape.

Are there circular hiking routes that include the Luchsstein?

Yes, many hikers incorporate the Luchsstein into longer circular routes within the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz. These routes often combine the historical monument with other natural attractions and viewpoints in the national park. Planning tools can help you discover and customize circular walks that suit your desired length and difficulty.

Is the Luchsstein suitable for a winter hike?

While possible, a winter hike to the Luchsstein would be significantly more challenging. The terrain, already difficult in dry conditions, can become treacherous with snow and ice. The remote location means paths may not be cleared, and daylight hours are shorter. Only experienced winter hikers with appropriate gear (e.g., microspikes, snowshoes) should attempt it, and always check weather and trail conditions beforehand.
