The protected area is located west and southwest of the Steinhuder Meer between the towns of Mardorf, Rehburg-Loccum, Winzlar and Hagenburg in the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park. It protects a large wetland that was created by the silting up of the Steinhuder Meer from west to east. The lowland was previously characterized by alder swamp forests on low moor and was regularly flooded when the Steinhuder Meer flooded in winter. Today, grassland with varying degrees of moisture and different levels of use predominates and is protected from flooding by a dam.

The Meerbruch meadows are crossed by numerous ditches, some of which were created in the 1950s to drain the area. The drainage measures largely destroyed the flora and fauna that was once typical of wet meadows.

In the north of the protected area, the Meerbach (Steinhuder Meerbach) flows through the meadows and pastures. Unused areas can be found in the areas near the sea. These are characterized by tall herbaceous meadows and woody plants. Sedge marshes and reed beds as well as hedges and trees can also be found.

By protecting the Meerbruch meadows, which are an important breeding and resting area for numerous endangered bird species, the area is to be preserved for flora and fauna. In the area designated as the core zone, the fen body is to be rewetted across the board in order to improve the living conditions for creatures adapted to wet locations. Small bodies of water for amphibians and birds have been created in several places. An observation tower has been built in the north of the nature reserve, from which the wet meadows can be easily seen.

The area has been a nature reserve since December 10, 1998. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the Hanover region and the districts of Nienburg/Weser and Schaumburg.
