The 2-storey building was erected in 1824 as a school ("Yorckschule") in a continuous half-timbered construction with two stairwells, separated for boys and girls.

After presumably repeated flood damage, the entire ground floor and the gable on the Nuthe side were made solid around 1870. During the Nazi era, the building was used by party and youth organizations, after the war primarily as a local history museum and music school. A radical conversion around 1985 reduced a large part of the original components, such as doors, windows, roofing and much more.

The local history museum shows how royal decisions, social democrats, freethinkers, inventors and manufacturers, economic crises, National Socialism, planned economy and monetary union shaped the economic and social life of Luckenwalde.

In the permanent exhibition you can find out what a mediaeval beer dispute and the great town fire in 1780 in Gera, 222 km away, have to do with the rapid economic boom in Luckenwalde. The town's history from the Luckenwalde castle to the biotechnology park is clearly explained. You can admire extraordinary pieces, such as Rudi Dutschke's pullover and other 12,000 exhibits.
