Hackfort Castle was built in the 13th century from a reinforced residential tower. It was destroyed by Spanish troops in 1586 and rebuilt in 1600. When the last baroness van Westerholt van Hackfort died in 1981, the property went to the Dutch Foundation for Natural Monuments. It is one of the best preserved castles in Gelderland.

In 1392, the fief register of the Lords of Bronckhorst mentions a house near "Hacforden" with a bailey and moats. It began as a tower house. It was largely destroyed by Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War in 1586. It was rebuilt in 1598 by Borchard van Westerholt.
