A highlight worth seeing, but one that should also make you think.
In September 1914, a few weeks after the start of the First World War, the Barmer cemetery of honor (3 hectares) was laid out on what was then Kohlenstrasse and is now Lönsstrasse.

As a memorial to the endless number of war dead, such places - they are usually referred to as "war cemetery" or "soldiers' cemetery" - are still very important today. "Now you, O Lord, let your servant depart in peace, as you said..." says the so-called "Song of Simeon" (Gospel of Luke chapter 2, verse 29). However, the many people buried here by no means died in peace, but rather became victims of war and an inhumane tyranny.
The most important and at the same time enduring function of military or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is to keep the memory of this suffering alive and thus - every generation anew (!) - to remind us of the lasting preservation of peace.

There is a small “compound” in the upper part of the Barmer cemetery of honor that is not part of the actual cemetery of honor. It consists of a memorial stone and seven graves of foreign prisoners of war.

The facility was suggested and created by the “Association of Former Prisoners of War Barmen”. The fallen soldiers died as prisoners of war in the last days of the war in Barmen hospitals and were buried in various cemeteries, only to find a common final resting place in the cemetery of honor in 1933. On May 21, 1933, the association handed the memorial over to the care of the city. The Belgian Vice Consul from Cologne and representatives of the authorities, warrior associations and churches were present. The memorial speech was given by retired rector Richard Blaß, who was called the “father of prisoners of war” because of his efforts to free German prisoners of war. He pointed out that German former prisoners of war had suggested the establishment of the facility. Here in Barmen we don't know more than the names and dates of those who died, but we are certain that they fought for their fatherland and their ideals and fell. At the hour of death they could not hear a word of consolation in their native language, which must fill everyone with compassion. The trombone choir of the Evangelical Men's and Young People's Association in Wichlinghausen, the French horn quartet of the municipal orchestra and the Barmens men's choir provided the musical accompaniment.
