The underground tunnels made of tuff and flint, a refuge for the inhabitants during the wars, are inhabited by several colonies of bats during the winter. But thanks to the darkness, the constant temperature and the constant humidity, they are also a particularly favorable place for growing mushrooms.

The Heyoule nature reserve in Eben-Emael is the oldest protected area on Sint-Pietersberg. It was established in 1973 and was the first part of a network that now includes more than ten nature reserves in the Neder-Geer. A dozen species of orchids live on the sunny slopes of Heyoule. Among them the frog orchid and the bee orchid. In winter, the underground galleries are home to several colonies of bats. natagora.be/reserves/heyoule
