The square was called Feldbergplatz from 1890 to 1940, Ludendorffplatz from 1940 to 1945, and Feldbergplatz from 1945 to today, named after the highest mountain in the Taunus Mountains, the Großer Feldberg.

This square was created during the Rhine bank expansion project at the confluence of Feldbergstraße and Rheinallee, with the Feldbergtor forming the Rhine's terminus. The square was named on April 23, 1890. In the 1940s, it was briefly renamed Ludendorffplatz. Since 1977, Feldbergstraße and Feldbergplatz have been connected to the Rhine bank by the so-called "Green Bridge" across Rheinallee.
