As early as 866, a first chapel was built here at the confluence of Örtze and Wietze instead of a pagan Thor sanctuary. According to tradition, a new chapel was built in the same place in 1217 and consecrated to the martyr Laurentius.
The origins of today's church date back to the 14th century. At that time, a simple rectangular building must have stood here. The former masonry crown and the bearings for the beams are inside z.T. still visible.
Something special is the old baptism of sandstone (about 1350), which has only found its home in the back of the church after a long wandering. The upper part lay for several centuries on a farm in Gerdehaus, where he served as a container for wood ash (needed for washing), until he came in 1860 to Hannover Museum. The foot, however, remained at the church and was unrecognized until 1985 as a stage in front of the bell tower.

Saint Lawrence, to whom this church in Müden (Örtze) is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was the Pope's archdeacon and was asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the church's treasure. Lawrence asked for three days, during which he distributed the church's assets among the poor inhabitants of Rome and, after the agreed time, came to the emperor with the poor to present them to him as the church's treasure. He was then tortured to death. Legend has it that he was roasted alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of Saint Lawrence - over coals. He is said to have been in good spirits and asked his executioner if he would turn him over.
The memorial day of Saint Lawrence in the calendar of saints is August 10th.
