There are sources that claim that the church grew out of a chapel erected by Saint Maternus in the early fourth century. The archaeological excavations of recent years contradict this suspicion. The oldest remnants found at that location came from Roman stilt houses from the first and second centuries. The first stone building on the site is said to be a third-century Roman bathhouse. However, during recent excavations in 2008, remains of a Roman basilica with apse from the fourth century were found. This room was certainly used as a 'prayer room'. This was the period that Servatius is registered as Servatio Tungrorum episcopus on the attendance list of the councils of Cologne (346) and Rimini (359), which is in line with the tradition that bishop Servatius had the Tongeren church built. Seven churches were built or renovated on the basis of this basilica. But the current service altar of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Nativity still stands above the apse with a priest's pew from the period of Servatius. Archaeologists also describe the existence of a 'mysterious monument' in the apse that has been venerated for many centuries.
