After the death of Friedrich III. In 1888 the Taunusbote called for a monument to be erected for him. It was proposed to erect this monument in front of the castle. Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm had rendered services to the city by making the palace a summer residence in 1878.
In 1889, the city combined the Upper and Lower Promenade and renamed them Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade. At the same time, a call for donations was made to the population in order to finance a memorial. Well-known artists were asked for designs and in June 1890 the Berlin sculptor Joseph Uphues was commissioned to realize the winning design. Victoria Kaiserin Friedrich inspected the design in the same month and was satisfied. The inauguration took place on May 22, 1892 in the presence of Victoria Kaiserin Friedrich, but on a small scale. 🚴‍♂️
