The Cattle Gate, built between 1396-1418, is one of three surviving city gates, but has lost its outer arch and gate tower.
The remains of a stair tower with a spiral staircase on the mountain side, which was designed as a saint's niche, are still reminiscent of the latter. If you look closely you can see a few more steps. Until the construction of Bramleystrasse, as the photo above shows, all road traffic into the Mühlental ran through the cattle gate, as did the cattle up and down, from which the gate takes its name.
