“The ‘Zollstock’ quarry was put into operation [in 1964] at the same time as the Göllheim cement plant. Both limestone and marlstone [= the most important raw material for cement production] are mined here on a total of 7 levels.
The relatively young deposits were formed around 22 to 18 million years ago [...].
Dyckerhoff AG is one of the leading manufacturers of cement and ready-mixed concrete in Germany.” The group has been part of the Buzzi Unicem Group (Italy) since 2004.
And also interesting: “Rare animals and plants have now found valuable refuges and habitats in the quarry.”
