The Henrichshütte is a former smelting works in the northwest of the old town of Hattingen and is named after Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, who founded the works for the production of iron and steel from the raw material iron ore in 1854. Most recently it belonged to the Thyssen Group. From 1987 the decommissioning phase began. This year the blast furnaces were blown out. Plants such as the steel mill and the forge closed by 2004, exactly 150 years after the smelter was founded.

"Sparks flew for 150 years when the blast furnaces at Henrichshütte spat out the molten iron. The fire went out in 1987. Today, the history of iron and steel comes to life again at this unique original site. Get to know former workplaces on the museum paths, see how molten metal is poured into molds and climbs onto the oldest surviving blast furnace in the area. There are many activities especially for families, such as the hut safari, a circular route with the mascot "Rat" and a great playground."
