Nowhere in Britain is comparable to the ancient landscapes of Assynt in the far north of the Scottish Highlands. Hikes to Stac Pollaidh take you to one of the region’s main attractions. The mini mountain boasts magnificent scrambling interest and views that will have you scraping your jaw off the Torridonian sandstone at your feet. The road at its base and its modest height mean that all of this is wonderfully accessible.

This diminutive mountain is the embodiment of why metres alone do not make a mountain. Its compact perfection makes for a pleasingly efficient mountain adventure, and one that includes the unique scenery of Assynt, the opportunity for some epic scrambling, and is bursting with more character than can be found in peaks many times Stac Pollaidh’s size.

Character: Short and crisp hike to Stac Pollaidh, one of the country's most spectacular lookout hills.
Route: From the parking lot, head for the newly rising path to the north towering mountain. The path soon turns to the right and leads around half the mountain on the northeast side. At a crossroads, take the left fork and then climb steeply to a ridge in the summit ridge. A few meters to the left, and you are standing on the eastern summit of Stac Pollaidh. The view is magnificent, thousands of small and larger lakes are flashing and sparkling in the sun, the long back of the Suilven is reminiscent of a stranded Galleone. Since it is only on the west summit with appropriate climbing skills, here begins the way back. To do so, first climb back into the saddle and from there head northwest down to the newly created ring path around the mountain. On it goes back to the south side of the Stac Pollaidh and further down to the parking lot. :-)

I would avoid completing the circular route as the later path (after point 5) is very boggy for most of the way back to the main path. Needs some time to dry out & recover.

The weathered crest of Stac Pollaidh was forged by ancient glaciers and aeons of erosion. What has been left behind is a wonderful rocky playground of curvey sandstone pinnacles — a delight for scramblers and climbers. Most of the pinnacles can be bypassed, though the true summit is gained by scrambling up a committing tower. This is a challenging grade II scramble and bear in mind that the climb has to be reversed!

The eastern summit of Stac Pollaidh is an excellent viewpoint, accessible via a well-maintained footpath from the car park at the foot of the mountain. Without any scrambling, you reach a height of approximately 590 meters, where you're rewarded with panoramic views across the Scottish Highlands. You'll see iconic peaks like Suilven and Cul Mor, and in clear weather, even as far as the Summer Isles and the Isle of Skye. The route is suitable for hikers without climbing experience and offers an impressive natural experience without any technical challenges.
