The Goldberg was used by the Celts and Romans as a settlement and observation site. Evidence for this is inter alia. a grave from the La Tène period (around 250 BC) and Roman coins. The place name is derived from the Goldberg, which was formerly called Rißenberg. The golden sand washed up by the Tertiary Sea later gave the elevation its name. Today the Goldberg is partly under nature protection; its special features are the downy oak forests in the summit area and the dwarf soft elk bushes along the dry grassy areas. Dwarf irises as well as large and black cow puffs grow especially on the southern slope.
