Built on the remains of a previous castle, the Rocca was first inhabited and expanded by the Visconti in the 13th and 14th centuries and then passed into the possession of the Borromeo family in 1449, who still owns it today. Inside, the castle houses charming artistic treasures, including the frescoes of the Sala di Giustizia in the Visconti wing. They were created at the beginning of the 14th century and depict, among other things, the victory of the Visconti over the Torriani. Also noteworthy are the frescoes of the Borromeo Wing, which were part of the Borromean Palazzo in Milan until 1943, but were moved to Angera after its destruction became. In addition, the Doll Museum is particularly worth a visit. With over 200 exhibits, it is one of the most important of its kind in Europe. From the Castellana Tower there is a view all the way to the Sacro Monte near Varese.

The Rocca Borromeo di Angera (also known as Rocca d'Angera) includes four sections with an internal courtyard and overlooks Lake Maggiore. It belonged to the Milanese archbishop, then to the Viscontis and the Borromeos. It offers one of the most beautiful views of the lake.
