The patronage "Maria (or Assumption)" of this church refers to one of the many commemorative days or feast days in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. It goes back to the feast of their physical acceptance into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15th.
In many rural areas it is customary that on this day herbal bundles (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) are collected by the population and blessed in the festival service.

There was a church on this spot as early as the 10th century.
The current form of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin dates from around 1500.
However, the tower had to be renewed in 1795 and has had this unique top ever since.
In the late Middle Ages, Aufkirchen became a place of pilgrimage. During this time there were many local pilgrimage sites, but Aufkirchen became an important Bavarian Marian pilgrimage site overnight when a fire broke out in 1625, which burned pictures and altars, but the Ganadenbild of the Mother of God remained completely intact.
That also explains why the interior is relatively simple. Instead of the altar that is otherwise common in Bavaria, there is a large cross. During Lent this cross is hidden by a large picture.
