History of the Starkenburg

The castle was built in 1065 to protect the Lorsch monastery. At first the name was Burcheldon. The name Starkimberg was first mentioned in 1206. Throughout the eventful history of the monastery, the castle has always offered refuge and protection for the monks.
As the second strongest fortress in the Electorate of Mainz, it covered the Mainz Bergstrasse. In 1765 the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
On Wednesday, October 22, 1924, the dilapidated keep of the Starkenburg was blown up at 2:45 p.m. The blasting of the building with walls up to three meters thick in the basement was a major operation: 1500 cubic meters of stones had to be blown away.
If the old keep, which was originally 28 meters high, had to be demolished due to its structural condition, it had to be demolished until 1930 (with the exception of the one that was only added in 1957).

The first documentary mention as Heppenheim was on July 17, 755 in a document of the Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation of a Marchar to the then Peterskirche in Heppenheim.[3] At that time, the city was the center of a Franconian mark. In 773, thanks to a gift from Charlemagne, the Mark Heppenheim became the property of the imperial monastery of Lorsch, for whose protection the Starkenburg was built above Heppenheim in 1065. The monastery had the rank of a principality. Over time, Heppenheim developed into the administrative and economic center of the monastery area, but lost with the decline of the monastery in the 11th/12th. century in importance again. In 1229 Emperor Frederick II placed Starkenburg under the administration of the Archbishops of Mainz, and in 1232 also Lorsch Abbey with Heppenheim.
