What an experience! The via ferrata under the waterfall is doable without climbing equipment. The section after the waterfall does require crampons and a climbing harness. Despite that, it is also very doable to walk back and forth!

Mountain bikers are best advised to leave their bikes at the rest area. Don't forget to lock them, of course.

You can reach the waterfall on foot in just a few minutes, provided you don't have a head for heights.

The short walk along the rock face is worth it not only for the spectacular view of the Rio di Fanes gorge. The opportunity to go behind the curtain of rushing water is truly spectacular.

Even though the short circular route is called a via ferrata (Via Ferrata Giovanni Barbara), you don't need a via ferrata set to reach the waterfall. You should definitely not have a head for heights, as the path runs directly along a rock face. I recommend taking the same route back from the waterfall. Of course, you can do the easy via ferrata completely as a circular route. This becomes a little more challenging as it continues, but is still doable for sure-footed hikers without a via ferrata set. From the gorge you have another great view of the Fanesbach falling down before you climb numerous steps back to the rest area on the main path.

The via ferrata consists of 2 parts:
The Via Ferrata Barbara and the Via Ferrata Delaiti.
If you want to do both as a circular route, I recommend starting the route above the Ponte Alto via the Ferrata Barbara.
An absolute must (even for hikers without via ferrata equipment but without a fear of heights) is to walk along the steel cable at least behind the waterfall. After that you can turn back.
The via ferrata itself continues behind the waterfall and leads down through a gap over a secured but not to be underestimated often wet steep step to the foot of the waterfall. The second part of the Ferrata Delaiti trail begins after you have crossed the stream at the foot of the waterfall on the steel bridge on the west side. (This bridge had already been washed away on one of my tours).

Instead of doing both via ferratas, I think there is a nicer option all the way through the valley and to all the waterfalls!!!!!

To assess the tour and whether you should go with/without a via ferrata set, these two external videos will help (many thanks to the producers for sharing)

a) Walk from the visitor center to the viewing platform on the waterfall.

b) Descend to the foot of the waterfall.

c) The Via Ferrata Barbara high over the steep step (via ferrata set highly recommended, but was not absolutely necessary for me personally) and behind the waterfall. Those who are less daring have to turn around here and go back over the viewing point and follow the road and go behind the waterfall from above.
d) Now continue to follow the wild valley of the Fanes along the stream. Its rushing waters and smaller waterfalls are a dream.
e) At the end there is the second high waterfall, the Cascate Sbarco de Fanes. From the base there is an impressive veil of water and after the climb you can also go behind the waterfall with the help of a rope!!!

No equipment is needed to descend or ascend this section! Obviously you have to wear boots and be careful. There is a slope but it is short.
