The medieval St. Stephen's Church in the historic old town of Schöppenstedt (Wolfenbüttel district) got a new tower after the devastating fire caused by lightning in 1999.
As a landmark of Schöppenstedt, this was just as crooked, because it is considered a landmark.
Now the tower should not always have been so crooked, and the inclination is due to the local people from the shield at the time. They had discovered grass cover on the church tower and were looking for a solution to remove it. According to a brilliant idea, they pulled a cow up to the church tower with a rope around its neck to graze the grass. On the way up, probably due to the tightness of the rope and the resulting breathlessness of the cow, she not only let her tongue hang out but also her life. The people from the shield, however, interpreted the sticking out of the tongue in a different way because they said the cow was already looking forward to the fresh grass, look ha licket already, look ha licket already they shouted enthusiastically. Due to the weight of the cow, the tower then tilted in the known way. Yes, that's how it should have been!

St. Stephen's Church was one of the first parish churches founded by Hildegrim von Chalons before 827 in the diocese of Halberstadt. From 1234 to 1401 the village of Schöppenstedt was an oppidum. Schöppenstedt was also the seat of an archdeacon. In 1515, Schöppenstedt was mentioned alongside other towns in the Duchy of Brunswick. The baroque hall church made of plastered quarry stone with three bays of the nave and a bay of the choir and 3/8th end was built in 1730-58. The outer walls are divided by pilasters. The square church tower in the west dates from the 3rd quarter of the 12th century. Behind its sound arcades is the belfry in which the church bells hang. The tower was later raised by one storey and fitted with a pointed slated spire. The helmet burned down after a lightning strike and was completely rebuilt. The portals are architecturally framed. The nave is covered with a mirror vault with lunettes, the slightly elevated chancel with a wooden ribbed vault. In the middle of the ground floor of the tower stands the so-called Pagan Column, erected after the mid-12th century, decorated with demons. The hall of the tower was originally open with two arcades to the nave and vaulted. There was a gallery above the hall, which was formerly connected to the nave by round-arched openings. The pulpit altar, built around 1745, was dismantled in 1967. Instead of the pulpit there is a crucifix. The statues of virtues are now in the west gallery.

The baroque hall church made of plastered quarry stones is located in the immediate vicinity of the spacious market square in Schöppenstedt. It stands out because of its squat tower with a crooked spire. The old helmet was burned down by lightning and had to be replaced.

Behind the church there is a small park that can be reached via a very short pedestrian street. Here you will find a few benches and shady trees that invite you to linger. On the other side there is a parish office with a spacious park area full of old trees. The associated community center is located in an eye-catching half-timbered building.
